Crater Mountain Bilums

A women from Haia weaving a bilum
Brief description
The Crater Mountain bilums are made of plant fiber obtained from plants or small shrubs in the forest. The women shred the bark of the shrubs and dry that out to get the material they will use to make the bilums. This is then dried out thoroughly and the fiber is twisted into required threads. The threads are then woven into what we see as the final out come of the bilums.

Sizes, patterns and styles of the bilums vary according to how the women want the final product to be. Bilums made from each community in CMWMA vary from each other.
Color
The colors used on the bilums are taken from plants found in the forest.
Use
The bilums have been a part of the peoples lives for generations and generations and have various uses.
The women carry food from gardens to their homes, women carry babies and children aging 1 year to 3 three years. Women also make them and give them to other people as gifts.
Apart from that there are many other uses.
Apart from the uses of these bilums made from the materials obtained from the forest the Crater Mountain women sell the bilums for little income.
The main purpose of selling these bilums is to earn some money. The money
is then used for things like sending their children to school, getting
medical treatment, buying some change of clothes or other things of
pressing need in their lives.
